Hawai`i
has a reputation for being a sun and surf paradise. However, one of
the best kept secrets is the hunting available in the Aloha
State.
Big game hunters have opportunities to pursue feral pigs, goats, sheep, and axis deer year-round. Island bird hunters enjoy access to 16 different species of game birds during the fall season and a wild turkey hunt in the spring.
Hawai`i's game animals are species that were introduced to the islands prior to statehood. Some game animals were brought to Hawai`i as gifts to royalty. Today, many of the big game mammals thrive in areas with little or no native vegetation; areas with severely altered ecosystems.
Areas with predominantly native vegetation are protected from game mammals through liberal hunting seasons and bag limits while highly unique places receive extra protection by fencing and removing game mammals.
