Magnifying glass with shearwater image, link to shearwater2 pageThe ancient Hawaiians called this beautiful bird `ua`ukani. The Wedge-Tailed Shearwater, as it is better known, has learned to adapt to a harsh, nomadic existence.

This bird will live its life at sea and come ashore only to mate and raise its young. It will nest in shallow burrows in the soft sand dunes along our shorelines... IF it reaches adulthood.

Hundreds are killed annually by uncontrolled or abandoned pets.

To protect Hawai`i's wildlife heritage, return unwanted pets to pet stores or animal shelters, leash your pets when visiting beaches where seabirds nest, and report stray animals you see near wildlife refuges to the Department of Land and Natural Resources.

Keep Hawai`i Wild… it's your heritage, too.
