Divers attempt to free a young monk seal from a mass of nets. Abandoned or lost nets, left drifting in our seas, continue to attract, ensnare and drown marine life. Tons of these nets are hauled from waters off the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, French Frigate Shoals, and other islands and sand bars dotting the Pacific. Report abandoned fishnets to the Department of Land and Natural Resources. Do not try to remove nets on your own. Marine debris, even in small amounts, can be just as deadly. Remember to cut or break plastic soda can rings. Bag your trash and dispose of it properly. Remove plastics from streams, storm drains and our beaches.
