Magnifying glass and shearwater image, link to shearwater1 pageThousands of seabirds nest in Hawai`i each year to raise their young. You can help save their offspring by turning off outdoor lights at night, especially during the months of October and November when many seabird chicks are emerging from their nests for their first solo flights. These fledglings are attracted by bright lights and are often maimed or killed due to their inexperience, colliding with cars and power lines.

If you find an injured seabird, please place it in a small covered box and immediately call your local bird button, link to DLNR Forestry and Wildlife divisionDLNR Forestry and Wildlife office for more details.
